No Weeknotes last week as I took some time off to soak up the sun and swim in the Adriatic Ocean with friends. This meant I’ve had a short week in the office, so here’s a reflection on what I learned in Italy that also applies to work.

It takes patience for things to grow. Despite endless desire and the right conditions, a little waiting pays off. This lesson came from the gardener attending my friend’s terrace. For the just-sown bougainvillea and her other plants to flourish, time is what’s needed.

Grand gestures aren’t a substitute for consistency. You need a bit of both. Such as recognition – like sharing your own milestones as well as others’ successes. And always showing up and doing what you say you will.

This lesson came from my friend. She shared a different perspective on caring for an ageing family. Being close enough to care for them, you’re in it every day and can burn out fast. When you live hundreds of miles away and think connection and respite are what’s needed, they might not be. And so, a gift offering said respite may not land as planned.

The real lesson is that communication is what matters – at work and with family. Ask someone what they need. What would they find most helpful? You can then avoid assuming. Which, even with the very best intentions, can lead to misunderstanding.
